Doing a project without using a computer is unheard of these days. Operating systems, office tools, databases, websites and more are central to us. Most of the time we take software for granted. Our new computer will come with the windows operating system pre installed. Our editing tool is usually MS Office Word and our spreadsheet is MS Office Excel. We take them for granted and no choice is involved. Is this right?

Choosing software is really about quality, availability, cost, durability. On my personal website I have posted a piece about Open Source software and development cooperation projects. I is my opinion that the factors related to Open Source software are equally valid for many research projects. Read more about it here:
